Club Meeting 9th February, 2021 - Sustainability, Self-Belief, and Self-Awareness
With an impressive two thirds of the club membership in attendance, Steve, our Toastmaster for the evening, gave us a quick-fire warm up routine, asking what three words described what we were thinking and feeling at the start of the meeting.
Then with a slip of Toastmaster tongue we were into our three prepared speeches from Qaya, Richard, and Craig.
Qaya’s speech, ‘I wasn’t born a vegan’ was a typically passionate delivery of a proposition for adopting a sustainable diet to keep ourselves and the planet healthy. Richard’s speech meanwhile, focused on his ‘burning desire’ to be a rock star. Perhaps not quite there yet, his speech was a reminder of the importance of self-belief. Craig’s speech was a reprise of his ‘Things are not always what they seem’ speech in which he uses a specific life example – a Tunbridge Wells monsoon - to remind us all that our feelings come from inside us, not the environment around us.
Michael, Tonderai, and Imogen provided the evaluations.
Our Topicsmaster for the evening, Marie, challenged our Table Topics speakers with a series of binary choices. Our champion for the week was Ron who explained his choice of cinema over Netflix.
Grammarian Simon chose 'ingenious' as our Word of the Day; defined as skilled at inventing new ways to do something, the ability to solve problems according to dictionary.cambridge.org. The word was used nine times during the evening. With Simon as Grammarian and Chris in the General Evaluator role there were lots of keen eyed and eared insights shared in their reports.
Thank you to everyone who took on a role and attended the meeting.
